Monday, April 6, 2009 - Update

I'm going to have to wear glasses, but I don't even like to wear clothes.

I'm kinda bummed about the whole thing. It's not that it's a huge deal to have glasses. Millions of people have glasses. . .I have glasses. But, no child should have to wear glasses. . . at least not until they're in school.

The eye doctor appointment was awful (although Olivia really acted the best that she could under the circumstances.) I made Ryan come with me because it was a dilation appointment and those are the worst. She screamed and screamed and there were two people holding her eyes open and two of us holding her arms and legs down. . .just awful. We were given three options:

1) We could do nothing and continue to monitor her.

2) We could try her in glasses to see if it helps her focus. Chances are. . .it probably won't, but there is also a chance that it could and save us from another surgery.

3) Surgery, which is extremely likely if we do nothing.

So, we opted for the glasses. We haven't picked out any frames yet, because Olivia was in no mood to have something else forced on her today. I honestly think that she'll look adorable in glasses, but it still breaks my heart just a bit.
Any advice on glasses (where to buy them, how to keep them on, etc.) would be appreciated.

Shelley, I had to change her caption after you posted. She doesn't like to wear clothes. . .I don't think she'll like to wear glasses either.

I know a lot of people have had success with Zenni Optical - I have a pair of glasses from them and I really like them, but I'm also not a toddler so I can't vouch for the smaller glasses. LOL!

I'm sorry to hear that eye appointments are always so traumatic for Mommy and Olivia. I know it hurts you to see Olivia screaming and being scared.

I know that glasses were not what you were hoping for. But, in the midst of that concern, try to remember what you always said about Erica. We all know how darling she was. She got her bi-focal lenses when she was 2 years old ... so close to the same age as Olivia.

It would be wonderful if the glasses not only prevented Olivia's eyes from getting worse but also helped them improve so that surgery is not needed.

Lastly - how incredibly awesome is it that Team Olivia and Logan are doing so good. Goes to show how many people's lives have been impacted by your beautiful children. I'm not sure that I will be able to make the walk, but I will be sending a donation in their names.

Thinking of you ...

I know that they are not the prettiest glasses available but we got Kellar these plastic like frames, they were totally bendable and they had a strap that you could put on the back of them to hold them on their head. He wore those when he was in his helmet and for awhile afterwards just to help him get used to them. Kellar is still not a huge fan of wearing them somedays he'll ask for them and others he chunks them.

Hi, Jodi! Two of mine have been in glasses for years - Isaac got his about 10 months Lorne about 15 months. Isaac was a BREEZE (probably a combination of his age and the fact that he was (is) an EASY kid to begin with!) and we really had no problems. We had the little plastic wrap-around frames which they did best with. Lorne, for whatever reason a combination that he was "older to know better" or the fact that nothing is *ever* easy with this child... was more opinionated and complicated. But after a while, even he got used to them. Now they wake up and ASK for their glasses - they hate when I even take them off to clean them because they have learned they can see better without them!

I've heard Zenni Optical is good, too. I've also heard Solo Bambini (http://www.solobambini.com) is good for kids. I would ask the eye doctor - it's kind of hard I think to buy glasses on-line for kids that little with all of the measurements that need to be taken in to account. (we've never bought them on-line ourselves b/c the boys' prescription is too strong)

We also used straps to keep them on and that really helped, too.

Hang in there. Hope it's a piece of cake. :)

Take care,
Kara

Claire has a little friend that was a preemie. She got glasses at around a year. I was amazed because she never messed with them. I asked my dad about it (he is an optometrist) and he said that once the kids realize it helps them see better they generally don't mess with them. They are just so happy to be able to see what they haven't seen or focused on before!

Lindy has the solo bambini ones too. We get ours at the optical shop at the hospital where we go to the ophthalmologist. I was told that not a lot of people sell that kind of glasses, but I haven't actually ever checked anywhere else. There is no way Lindy would keep them on without the strap on them. She still hasn't realized they help her see. Maybe one day she'll understand. Do you know what kind of prescription she'll have? I justed looked online and we could never order there because her prescription. I would have to try the glasses on her anyway.
