Tuesday, March 30, 2010 - Update

Should've eaten one of these every day.

Don't let the picture fool you. I ate most of the apple and then she wanted it so that she can take bites and then spit it out in little pieces. I only wish she was eating the apple. That's how she eats most of her food. The girl doesn't like to swallow. I tell ya, I will go out to dinner and watch other toddlers snarf down their food and I'm so incredibly jealous!! I just sit and stare at them in amazement. . .they open their mouths, put food in, chew it up and swallow it. I just wish I knew what to do. I know she has something wrong, but I don't know what and I don't know what to do. Don't criticize, but she still takes a bottle a day. That's the only way to get some calories in her. She's very particular about her sippy cups and will not drink any milk out of them. . only water and juice. She'll drink 8+ oz of milk in a bottle, but only takes 1 or 2 sips from a cup. I get so frustrated. I am, however, thrilled that she is feeling better. Too bad my husband is now sick with possibly the same stuff. I thought it was spring? Shouldn't all of this be over with? :)

One of my daughters is the same. She drinks 300ml of milk every morning from a bottle but if I get another 100ml (of water/juice I must add, milk only gets drunk from a bottle) into her during the day from a cup, that is a lot. Enya also has trouble chewing and swallowing table food- after pocketing it in the mouth for 5 or so minutes she'll usually spit it out.

Most days we spend about an hour trying to get a meal eaten with Maddie. She can eat like a bird and sometimes she will only eat a couple of bites from every meal, but if I give her juice, she will drink that like there is no tomorrow. Kids eating patterns are strange and I don't know anyone who has them figured out.

Hi, I love your blog and check in on your little one frequently. However, I don't know that I have ever commented. My 6 yr old son was a preemie but only a 32 weeker. He is still not on the growth chart! Weighs in at a whopping 36 lbs at 6 yrs. We had lots of what you describe at the dinner table. Couldn't get him to eat and he would spit his food out. He was referred to occupational therapist who worked with some sensory issues like aversions to taste texture and smell with him. This was when he was almost 3. It did help. I am sure you have already been told of this but I really wanted to give you a little hope. I know it is so hard to watch them gain and then get sick and go backwards. We still fight that to some degree!

Don't you worry if anyone judges you; they don't know what they're talking about. My 2 year old takes 2-3 bottles a day. It is the only way I can get formula in him (he can't seem to tolerate more than 5 oz at a time).

Sensory issues are playing a big role in his feeding. He seems to make progress and gets sick with some "virus" like illness and regresses big time.

I know what you mean by feeling jealous of other toddlers. We were at Walmart and I mentioned fries to my son (one of the few foods he'll eat) and the lady said "we don't have a MacD's in here, but the kids love Subway" I laughed inside.

You have my understanding.
