Sunday, November 11, 2007 - Update

Olivia had to go back on CPAP today. She had numerous As and Bs in a row which was what prompted them to make the decision. When they checked her diaper, however, she had a very large stool. It’s possible that she was just trying to pass it. I don’t know about you but when I’m having “stooling issues” I have to hold my breath too. They also skipped one of her feedings, did an x-ray and started her on Reglan. When Dr. Dorn mentioned Reglan, Ryan and I already knew a lot about it because it is a medicine that our guinea pigs have used numerous times. It helps them with digestive issues. He said, “I didn’t know they used it on guinea pigs” to which we replied, “I didn’t know they used it on people.” We’ll just have to see how she does with the changes that were made. I know that she’s had only 1 A and B on the CPAP today as of about 7:30 p.m. I’m hoping that we see a decrease because no matter how many times you see her do it. . .it doesn’t get easier. Thankfully, she doesn’t seem too uncomfortable on CPAP this time. I was also able to rock her for a little bit tonight as well. Let me tell you, she’s a beautiful baby.

She did lose 32 grams last night, but she had gained quite a bit in the last few days so we’re not too concerned. Tonight her weight stayed the same and with her feeding changes, that’s probably okay since we actually expected a little bit of a loss. Please continue the prayers during this time. We really don’t feel that it is too much of a setback. They are just trying to determine whether the As and Bs are caused by apnea of prematurity, reflux or something else entirely. Please pray that they find the answers that they need to help Olivia continue to improve. I know that I often complain and cry out “Why me?” But, there’s never a day where I am not thankful for my daughter. I realize how lucky I am to have her. I wish Ryan and I did not have to go through all of this, but if it’s what we have to do to get our baby girl, then we’ll gladly accept the challenge. Our love knows no boundaries!!

Jodi,

I just wanted you to know that I just got home from watching football with some people that I just met. One of the couples there had a baby girl with them named Abby. She was a tiny perfect baby girl. I asked how old she was and the mom said, "3 months adjusted age, 7 months real age." She was born at 24 weeks and spent four months in Wesley's NICU. She's doing awesome and was taking a bottle (slowly) and fell asleep on her daddy. No help breathing and only a few problems with acid reflux. She was also a twin who lost her sister. I just wanted you to know that there are awesome success stories coming out of the Wesley NICU. They had nothing but great things to say about the nurses there. She said to ask about Abby Stevens and they would know who you're talking about. Olivia is in awesome hands.

Love always,

Kerry

Hey Jodi,

I wanted to add something in here...Elise is on Reglan 3x a day and she is also on Prilosec 2x a day...she has a severe case of reflux....it really works for her! Seems to help her keep her food down much better and she is much happier too :P
Hopefully that will work for Livi..and we will continue to pray for those A's and B's to be worked out. Lets all remember God knows and is in control! HE will see her through this!
Love you!

I have been thinking of the 3 of you all week...I haven't been able to get on the blog for the past week and a half and it seems you have had quite the week. I continue to pray for your little Angel Olivia everyday!! She is so precious and special. Everytime I read the blog, I wonder why this had to happen to you...but on the other hand I have to remember how lucky you are to have her and the fact that she continues to do so well.
Thinking of you always...
Love, Mandy

I was trying to find your email address to talk to you about reflux/meds and so forth. Ashton is 29months old with severe reflux to the point of being fed by j tube 16hours a day. Reglan can cause severe reactions and should only be used if there is a motility issue, not just reflux. If she is refluxing from above then the reglan isn't going to help her. She should be on a PPI med and not a motility agent. Email me if you have more questions...we have been down the horrible road of reflux and meds for too long.
