Wednesday, September 24, 2008 - Update

Mmmm. . .
I love my biter bisuits!

We have been working really hard on self-feeding. I'm so proud of her progress. She still struggles with small items like Cheerios and Puffs, but she's getting the hang of larger items. Sometimes when she gets food into her mouth, she doesn't quite understand how to "release" it. I never thought about what a milestone it is for babies to feed themselves. We are still struggling quite a bit with the sippy cup. I wish that was going better since she doesn't want her bottle all that much anymore. Her bottle amounts have drastically decreased lately and I can tell since she's barely gained a pound in two months. Olivia continues to weigh right around 16 lbs. She would much rather eat baby food, which doesn't have as many calories as formula. I wouldn't mind so much if she would drink something from her sippy cup. I am thrilled that she enjoys food so much. Lately, she has loved her macaroni and cheese. She also likes when I cut her up a few pieces of pasta. We even made up a song about it.

(To the tune of the Oscar Mayer song.)

My macaroni has a first name
It's M-A-C-A-R
My macaroni has a second name
It's O-N-I and cheese.
Oh, how I love macaroni
Mama, can I have more please?

Yeah, so I don't get out much. . .

try using different spouts on the sippy cups. My 1st mastered a straw before she got the hang of a sippy cup. Personally I think the Avent ones are best, but we also have Nuby cups and Tommy Tippy - they're all different

If it gets to be a problem you could always add some extra calories to her baby food by adding some pureed avocado, peanutbutter or something like that.

Is she interested in juice out of cups or bottles at all? I'm having a very hard time transitioning Emery to the sippy cup. He prefers bottles and purees and that's it.

I hope she learns to self feed better soon! Try giving her gerber rice cereal if she likes it. If she doesn't then try mixing it with the baby food she likes. Rice cereal has plenty of calories :)

Here's my two cents...
...on the sippy cup...remove the plastic plug inside. Sure it helps the cup not spill, but it makes it impossible to learn to drink from it. Why would you suck on something when their is nothing to encourage you to? With the plug out, she will actually get a little taste of what is inside, and then she will want to suck more out. Don't be surprised if she just wants to chew on it a bit. That's normal! When we get a new sippy cup, I always take the plug out and throw it away. Even if tipped over the cup rarely spills much out anyway.

...as for baby food not being as high calorie...well that is not always true. If a baby consumes 2 jars at 70 calories each (which some of the meat/veggie mixes are), then you have indeed equaled a 7 oz bottle. Give them a drink and some puffs after that, and you have even more calories. I lived on a strict diet of Cheerios for almost a year when I was little.

...as for her weight...don't listen to what everyone else says about weight. Just because their child weighs a certain amount, it doesn't mean that Olivia should weigh the same. Even your doctor would say that Olivia is doing fine. She is not losing weight, and she has not quit eating or drinking entirely. Every child has ups and downs in their diet. It's what they do. Ask me...I have 4! One week you think that they will starve, and the next week you cannot feed them enough. Olivia is happy and healthy, and that is truly what matters.

totally agree with the last comment (kim). I have 3 and they are totally different. Some days they live on air, other days they eat more than i do. As for weight gain - this tapers off pretty rapidly from about 10 months onwards and weight gain is much slower. Don't forget, Olivia is burning a lot more calories these days because she is more active. My 12 month old is 10 kgs, my 3 1/2 year old is only 5 kgs heavier than that! As for removing the non spill plug on the cup - definitely a good idea!

I would agree Jodi that each child is different. Gannon had a terrible time figured out the cup...he didn't use it til he was 15 mo. old(as you know he was not a preemie) I would take out the plug, try every single kind out there...and he just didn't figure it out from 9-15 months of age. Now of course he still has a sippy cup with a hard spout. But in the beginning we had to have a soft spout like the Nuby because it was the closest to the nipple on his bottle. Elise was the opposite from Gannon she loves the cup...the spout doesn't matter to her. In the beginning I did take out the plugs on her cup too so she would know that good stuff is inside the cup :) I have no doubt Olivia will learn how great the cup is and how to feed herself! Is hard, but she will get it :)

As the weight thing...I can relate on having a child that doesn't gain weight like other kids too. Gannon was in the <5% on the growth charts forever! But his dr just reminded me Gannon was small from the beginning and thats ok. She looks amazing Jodi! She is growing and is getting new skills each day! What a miracle baby girl! I know you are proud of her and its wonderful that you keep us all posted on her each day! Thank you Jodi!

I like Kims ideas too... my 2 kids were totally different... Jake drank from a sippy cup right away, but could not figure out how to suck from a straw till past 2 years old! But Nate was seriously drinking from a straw at like, 8 months old! Crazy the difference! Arent those biter biscuts sooooo messy!!! But babies love them! Uh-o, here's another crazy word!!
bzfotuquu WOW! Wasnt that the word last time?! Maybe its an actual word...lol

Give a straw sippy cup a try. My son just turned 2 and still doesn't drink well from a sippy cup (he will if you hold it for him, but he doesn't get to tilt his head back in order to drink). He learned to drink from the straw in a couple of tries and it has been great!

My son also had issues with smaller foods like puffs and cherrios. He loved the biter biscuts and the zwebak (sp?) toast. Anything that he could kind of knaw on vs. actually chew. It does get better! Around 15 months of age he really started to take off.
