Saturday, January 12, 2008 - Update

I often wonder why God allows babies to be born so prematurely. They are His children. . .why doesn’t he want to give them the best start at life? I have come to realize that the lives of babies born prematurely strengthen the faith of everyone who knows them. I don’t know how Olivia’s premature birth will affect her life or what issues she will face. I know that she is without her twin brother because of it. As painful as the last few months have been, one can’t just forget about everything and expect premature babies to become like full term babies. You don’t magically get those 17 weeks back. I love Olivia just as she is. That is why I dislike it when people talk about when premature babies should “catch up?” Why should she have to catch up to full term babies born when she was? They started off on different playing fields. She is going to be on her own timetable and I want her to always be proud of her accomplishments. I’ll never know why things happened the way they did, but God has definitely used her and Logan in miraculous ways.

I think Olivia is having a growth spurt right now. She has taken two bottles today that were over 100 ccs. We’ve started putting her in size 1 diapers instead of newborns and she has begun wearing 0-3 month outfits (although they are still a little big.) She’s also smiling a lot more and has begun finding her voice. She grows more beautiful every day

Olivia will be proud of herself because her parents will always support her and encourage her in everything she does. I'm glad to hear you didn't catch a cold because I know that would have added even more stress to you! I bet you are counting the days until her next RSV shot. And I'm really sad to hear about your rat. I know some people don't understand the bond we can have with our pets but I know how you are hurting over this. Let me know if I can do anything. Hope to see you on Wednesday!

Love always,
Kerry

You have such a beautiful attitude. Olivia and Logan are so lucky. You all have touched my heart and helped to strenghten my faith. God gave you these beautiful premature babies because he knew you were the right person and you would do all the right things for them and others.

Olivia has been such an inspiration to me and so many others. She is a shining example of the strength and perseverance of the human spirit. She simply tackles whatever lies ahead with everything she has. She never quits...never gives up. She is our sweet little "over achiever"! I remember the post many months ago from a lady whose daughters' favorite animal was the Giraffe. The little girl couldn't say Giraffe, so she said "Walk Tall". That's Olivia...walking tall!!

Preemie Olivia and her full term cousin Izzy are both amazing little girls. They each have their own strengths and weaknesses. They have their similarities and their differences. We will all marvel at their accomplishments and applaud their successes. We don't know what lies ahead for them, but they are both blessed with loving parents, grandparents, and a God that loves them...so their future should be wonderful! There is one thing I know for sure. Olivia and Izzy are my two favorite granddaughters!

With Olivia being born premature, and having her seem so weak at the begining, it will make her so much stronger as she grows up. She has overcome so many things, and her knowing what she did as a baby, she will have the confidense to do anything in the future.
Jodi, I'm sorry about your other children. I hope that they start feeling better soon.
